Each person living with ALS may experience their own unique set of challenges that may change over time when it comes to achieving adequate nutrition and maintaining their weight. This webinar will discuss various ways to maintain good nutrition through the foods you consume\, the way you prepare your meals\, how you stay hydrated and the additional support you may need when you are unable to eat enough to meet your body’s needs. \nAbout the Presenters: Brittany Hitson (pictured left) is an Alabama native who moved to Chicago in 2018. She received a Bachelor’s of Science in Nutrition/Dietetics with a Minor in Business from Auburn University in 2015 and then went on to obtain her Master’s of Science in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she also completed her dietetic internship in 2016. She is currently working as an inpatient Clinical Dietitian at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and provides support to: general medicine\, surgical/urological services and the neonatal intensive care unit\, as well as the Lois Insolia ALS Clinic at the Les Turner ALS Center. She has been a part of the ALS Clinic Team since 2020 and also assists with inpatient ALS G-tube admissions. \nDominique Kosk (pictured right) was born and raised on the north side of Chicago. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from Dominican University and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers. She completed a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology at Loyola University Chicago. Dominique has a certificate in nutrition support and is currently working at Northwestern Memorial Hospital as an inpatient Advanced Clinical Dietitian in the intensive care unit. She is one of two dietitians in the Lois Insolia ALS Clinic at the Les Turner ALS Center at Northwestern Medicine\, providing nutrition care and counseling for people living with ALS since 2016. \nSign up to attend the July webinar here!

To commemorate the occasion\, please join us for a very special discussion with two longtime friends of the Les Turner ALS Foundation: Jonathan Eig\, acclaimed New York Times best selling author of ‘Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig\,’ and Lin Brehmer\, renowned Chicago DJ and radio personality\, and current host of WXRT’s midday show. During the 30-minute program\, Jonathan will discuss what went into writing ‘Luckiest Man\,’ who Lou Gehrig was on and off the field\, his diagnosis and battle with ALS\, and the lasting legacy of the man forever remembered as the “Iron Horse.” \n‘Luckiest Man’ is the definitive account of the life and death of baseball legend Lou Gehrig\, and won the Casey Award for best baseball book of the year in 2006. \nJonathan Eig is the author of five books\, three of them New York Times best sellers. His most recent work\, ‘Ali: A Life\,’ won the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sportswriting. He was born in Brooklyn and graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Our virtual gala includes entertainment\, an online auction\, virtual paddle raise\, and an optional dinner package all from the comfort of your home! \nHarvey and Bonny Gaffen Advancements in ALS Award\nSteve Gleason \n \nSteve Gleason\, will be presented with the Harvey & Bonny Gaffen Advancements in ALS Award. Steve played for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints from 2000-2008 before being diagnosed with ALS in 2011. Steve is a co-founder of Team Gleason and Answer ALS\, both of which have brought ALS research\, technology and advocacy to the forefront. \nHope Through Caring Award \nRobert Ives \n \nThe Hope Through Caring Award honoree is Robert Ives\, a long-time member of our Les Turner ALS family. Robert has lived with ALS since 2014\, is active in our Chicago Support Group and is a dedicated donor to the Foundation’s Research and Support Services programs. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Clinical Trials 101\nFeaturing Benjamin Joslin\, CCRC\, Clinical Research Project Manager\, Northwestern University Feinberg School\nTuesday\, December 8\n12-1pm\n \nThe Les Turner ALS Center at Northwestern Medicine is among the global leaders in ALS research. Our clinical research encompasses a broad range of work\, including biomarker studies\, open label therapeutic studies\, natural history studies and clinical trials. Whether participating in innovative clinical trials or long-term observation studies\, our work offers hope to persons living with ALS and their caregivers while also uncovering new information about this disease. \nDuring this discussion\, Benjamin will provide a basic understanding of ALS research and inform patients about how they can participate in clinical trials at our Center. He will go over the different aspects of clinical trials and their definitions\, including phase I\, II\, III\, IV trials and observational studies. He will also focus on prescreening procedures at Northwestern Medicine\, placebo-controlled trials\, and will highlight the breakthrough Healey Platform Trial. Finally\, he will go over inclusion and exclusion criteria that would qualify or disqualify an individual living with ALS in current or future trials. \nBenjamin was born and raised in Chicago. He graduated from Colby College in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Neuroscience. Following his undergraduate studies\, he enrolled in the Peace Corps\, serving in Zambia for three years\, where he focused on public health promotion\, including the development of women’s groups\, fighting HIV/AIDS through sports\, and combating malaria. \nFollowing the Peace Corps\, Benjamin returned to Chicago to pursue a graduate degree in public health from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He has completed his coursework and is currently working on his thesis. While pursuing his graduate degree\, he has been working as clinical research coordinator for Dr. Senda Ajroud-Driss\, director of our Lois Insolia ALS Clinic at Northwestern Medicine. Together\, they have grown her portfolio of neuromuscular research\, namely ALS research\, hereditary amyloidosis (AMY-LOY-DOSIS)\, and peripheral neuropathy.
