Breathing support for people with ALS

Progress — 60%

Can I choose not to use NIV?

The decision to use NIV is yours. But it’s important to understand how your ALS symptoms might change if you choose not to use NIV.

ALS is a progressive disease. This means your ALS symptoms will get worse over time. If you choose not to use NIV, it may become harder for you to breathe on your own. This can make it harder to do everyday tasks, spend time with family and friends, and take part in activities you enjoy.

If I start NIV, can I stop using it?

You may decide to stop using NIV if it’s no longer helping you or if it’s becoming too hard for you to manage. If you choose to stop using NIV, talk to your ALS care team about other treatment options to help you stay comfortable and improve your quality of life.
