Tracheostomy and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) for people living with ALS

Progress — 81%

Downside: Swallowing challenges

Having a trach can make it harder to swallow as you normally do. This can increase your risk of aspirating, or choking. Your ALS care team can recommend ways to make swallowing easier, like making changes to your diet or switching to a different kind of trach.

Many people who use a trach and IMV also use a feeding tube to get the nutrition they need. Learn more about nutrition support for people with ALS.
