Tracheostomy and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) for people living with ALS

Downside: Lung suctioning

If you get a trach, you will need to have your lungs suctioned regularly using an airway cleaning device. Suctioning clears secretions from your lungs and helps you breathe.

Suctioning can be uncomfortable, and doing it too frequently can cause bleeding and increase your risk for infections. Your ALS care team can give you guidance on how often to suction and suggest ways to make it as comfortable as possible.
