Using a trach can help you live longer, so you can spend more time with the people you love.
A trach can help to keep materials like food, liquids, and saliva from getting into your lungs by mistake. The trach also provides access for a caregiver or doctor to suction your lungs regularly to clear out secretions and help you breathe.
Most people have a ventilator connected to their trach for additional breathing support. This is called invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).
Using a trach and IMV can help give you more energy.
