Tracheostomy and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) for people living with ALS

Invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV)

Most people living with ALS who use a trach also use invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). IMV is when a ventilator is attached to your trach.

Some people start using IMV immediately after getting a trach, while others have a trach for a while before they start using IMV. Your timing may differ depending on your medical needs, where you live, and what your doctor recommends.

There are many different types of ventilators that can provide IMV. Some ventilators can collect information about your breathing and send it to your doctor, so they can monitor your health. And some ventilators can be incorporated into power chairs to offer greater freedom and independence.

You will need to rent your ventilator from a medical equipment company. Depending on where you live, you may be able to choose from multiple companies. When you get a ventilator, the medical equipment company will work with you and your ALS care team to adjust the settings on your ventilator and make sure it works for you.

Your ALS care team can recommend the best type of ventilator and the best medical equipment company for you.
