How the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Began
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge grew from a small network of family members, friends, and ALS advocates into a worldwide movement during the summer of 2014. As millions of people shared videos, nominated others, and donated, the challenge brought unprecedented attention and support to the fight against ALS.

2014 — The First Challenge
Chris Kennedy, a professional golfer, challenged his cousin Jeanette Senerchia in honor of her husband, Anthony Senerchia, who was living with ALS. Jeanette accepted the challenge and nominated others, helping the movement gain its initial momentum.

The Movement Spreads
The challenge quickly reached Pat Quinn and Pete Frates, two young men living with ALS. Together with their families, friends, and supporters, they helped bring the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to millions of people around the world.

A Global Phenomenon
What began as a simple social media challenge soon became a worldwide movement. Millions of people—including families, schools, athletes, celebrities, and community groups—participated, raising unprecedented awareness and support for ALS organizations.

Today
More than a decade later, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge continues to inspire people around the world.
