Since 1977, the Les Turner ALS Foundation’s mission has been to provide the most comprehensive care and support to people living with ALS and their families so they can confidently navigate the disease, and advance scientific research for the prevention, treatment and cure of ALS.
Our donors make that work possible. Your compassion and dedication inspire us every day, and we can’t thank you enough.
Please take a few minutes to read our latest annual report, which describes how we turned your donations into impact through care and support, research, advocacy for the ALS community, and resources that empower people living with ALS and their families. As the season of year-end giving draws near, please know that your donations to the Les Turner ALS Foundation mean so much.
With its ability to improve neuron health, experimental drug NU-9 has already shown promise in reversing ALS. Now, the National Institute on Aging has provided approximately $7.3 million to fund exploration into the drug’s effectiveness in other neurodegenerative diseases.
Invented by chemist Richard B. Silverman, NU-9 emerged as an important compound to potentially eliminate neurodegeneration through a cross-disciplinary collaboration between Silverman and neurologist P. Hande Ozdinler. Both Silverman and Ozdinler are members of the Les Turner ALS Center at Northwestern Medicine.
Rather than treating symptoms from specific diseases, NU-9 instead addresses the underlying mechanisms. That gives scientists hope that the drug should demonstrate effectiveness in the common mechanisms that give rise to multiple neurogenerative diseases.
Though decades have passed since Bob Ives and Jim Schlader (pictured left to right) wore their uniforms, we’re proud to honor these two veterans for their dedication and sacrifices, which continue long after their service. Veterans are twice as likely to develop ALS compared to non-veterans, and both men face a new battle after receiving an ALS diagnosis later in life.
Bob served as a Project Engineer in the U.S. Army from 1961-63, working on an M48 tank conversion project at the Red River Arsenal in Texarkana, Texas. Jim enlisted in the Navy in 1970, training in aviation, electronics, anti-submarine warfare, and cryptographic systems.
Today, Bob and Jim find hope and essential support from our Support Services team, which provides individualized care, access to assistive technology, and guidance on veterans’ ALS benefits. For veterans like Bob and Jim, this assistance is more than a service; it’s a lifeline, empowering them to live with dignity and resilience despite the challenges of ALS.

Join us for our November ALS Learning Series
Join us this Thursday, Nov. 14 for our next ALS Learning Series webinar with Dr. Richard Bedlack, an inspiring leader in ALS research and care.
In this live session, “Stitching Strength: What I’ve learned about hope in ALS and weaving that into my practice,” Dr. Bedlack will explore the role of hope in health, especially in ALS. He’ll discuss its significance, where it originates, and the ways clinicians can foster or inadvertently diminish it. Dr. Bedlack will also share innovative approaches he uses to optimize hope in his own clinic.
Offered at no cost to the ALS community, this webinar is a valuable opportunity to gain insights directly from an ALS expert.
