Chicago Bears legend and NFL Hall of Famer Steve McMichael died this week at the age of 67. We’ve been honored to support Steve and his family since his ALS diagnosis in 2021.
When we presented Steve with the Les Turner ALS Foundation’s inaugural ALS Courage Award, he said, “I see the compassion in people – that’s when God is smiling. Every man lives but not every man really lives. And I’ve lived 10 lives.”
That’s what we’ll remember about “Mongo”—and the incredible group of family and friends who stood beside him: they made every moment count. We’re grateful we had the opportunity to celebrate his courage, his strength in the face of ALS, and his Hall of Fame legacy.
Our board member Dan Pompei wrote a powerful tribute to Steve in The Athletic and the New York Times.
As his friend and teammate Keith Van Horne said, “He sure put up one heck of a fight. Let’s hope he is in a peaceful place. No more suffering for sure.”
If you or someone you know needs support after an ALS diagnosis, you can learn more about ALS and explore our ALS resources. Our mission at the Les Turner ALS Foundation is to support people living with ALS and their families and fund research that will lead to better treatments and a cure for the disease.
By making a donation or attending events like the ALS Walk for Life on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Soldier Field, you can help create a world free of ALS.
